What is an Intrusion Detection System or Intrusion Prevention System? An IDS or IPS is similar to a Network Sniffer, basically is collects ALL the packets on a network and then compares these packets to a "signature" database of hacker attacks, worms, viruses or other malicious activity. The IDS can then alert you to the activity, or contact your firewall and block that IP from your network. Think of an IDS as a Security Monitor of your network, it will watch your network and detect hacker attacks both from INSIDE your network and from OUTSIDE your network. You have to remember that the most damaging attacks on your network are from the INSIDER!
